It is very important to know what a draft is. Some students are convinced that the writing process consists of two major stages – producing the first draft and the final copy. However, it is a mistaken opinion that can be often heard during the seminars for graduates and courses for undergraduates. It is necessary to differentiate between two types of papers i.e. a draft and term paper. Keep in mind that a final draft of a term paper is not considered a completed work. It is just the last phase of the assigned project. At this stage, you should go the extra mile to examine your topic properly. However, you should not state firmly that it is necessary to keep researching the project. You may end your piece of writing by giving a hint that the main question can be examined further.

Some people cannot realize that the same approach is used for writing the first draft which is also called the initial one. The first draft should present research results you have obtained while exploring your subject. Thus, it will be much easier for readers to comment on the paper and underline the points that have to be corrected.

Each college or university department has its own point of view about writing drafts and it does not matter whether it is a term paper or a dissertation chapter.

Few helpful tips that should be used when preparing drafts:

  • According to structural peculiarities, drafts can be considered one chapter or the whole paper. Mind that these pieces of writing are not supposed to be outlines including the points you are going to discuss when creating your paper. Moreover, drafts are neither piles of material gathered in terms of research nor some illogically connected ideas. Each draft has a thesis statement which is supported by the provided evidence. Drafts as well as other academic papers are written in grammatically correct sentences and divided into paragraphs.
  • Wen producing a draft, a writer can emphasize any issues that can help readers get the main point. However, it is not advised to ask readers to present their reflections on the matter. At the same time, you may leave comments of the following type: “I am not sure whether it is suitable to give this quotation here” or “I do not know whether my conclusion is reasonable enough.” Nevertheless, you cannot make the following notes: “How to present this viewpoint?” If you make a lot of remarks throughout the draft asking for help, your readers may think that you want them to write the paper instead of you.
  • Your draft may have some incomplete sections. Some parts may be in the form of an outline and some ideas may not be uphold by arguments. Nonetheless, your draft should not contain a lot of such gaps. Besides, it is completely useless to think that readers will help you write your work.
  • You need to keep in mind that references may be incomplete in the first draft. However, there should be a clear distinction between the parts taken from the sources and your own writing. In addition, you need to remember that it is extremely important to cite the sources you refer to appropriately. Thus, try to do it every time you provide a quote. It will prevent you from making mistakes that may result in plagiarism accusations.

The provided tips are not supposed to impose any limits on you when writing your draft. However, you need to remember that papers have to be submitted on time.
