Introduction

Plant growth is influenced by very many factors that among others include soil salinity (Orcutt & Nilsen, 2000). Increase in soil salinity leads to the unavailability of water for the plant roots in the soil (Munns, 1993). This leads to the suffocation of the plant since water is the most important solute in the metabolic reactions of any plant. Therefore, unavailability of water for the plant would lead to the reduction in metabolism and other plant physiological processes (Grundon, 1987). This adds up to slow growth and eventual death during extreme cases (Bernstein, 2010). However, there are plants that are adapted to extremely saline conditions. Most grasses however are not adapted to such conditions, thus grass in lawns exhibit slow growth as a result of the salt sprinkled on driveways during winter (Brede, 2000).

Hypothesis

If salt is poured on a plant that is not tolerant to excessive salinity, then its growth and development would be inhibited.

Controlled Experimental Method:

a)      Fifteen grass strands were uprooted from four arbitrary points in a lawn. It was ensured that the uprooted strands had all the roots with the strands.

b)      The grass was then soaked in distilled water to remove the soil attached to the roots without damaging the roots.

c)      Bush fertile soil was then collected in a basin and partitioned into ten equal parts.

d)      The fifteen strands from each of the points from the lawn was then mixed up and then again separated to give ten different groups with six strands each.

e)      Each of the groups was then planted in separate deep trays full of the bush soil labeled A to J. The length of the part of the grass above the soil of each strand was then measured and average lengths for each basin recorded. The basin labeled C was named ‘control’.

f)        In trays A, B and D, two spoonfuls of salt was sprinkled to the base of the grass. To trays E, F and G, four spoonfuls were sprinkled while in H, I and J, six spoonfuls were added.  No salt was added to tray C. The grass was then watered weekly with a liter of fresh tap water.

g)      The height of the strands was then taken after every week for five weeks and the measurements recorded in centimeters. Any other observations on the grass were made and reordered as well.

a)      Grass strands in trays A, B and D had an average increase in length of 1.07 cm in five weeks. Trays E, F and G had an average increment of 0.53cm. Trays H, I and J had an average decrease of 0.43 cm.

b)      The control experiment recorded a very high rate of growth and had an increase in grass height of 4.5cm

c)      Further, the grass in trays H, I and J started to change in color and started to turn yellow and tended towards drying up. On the other hand, the grass strands in the control tray flourished and became very healthy.

Conclusion

Increase in the salinity of the soil leads to the inhibited growth of the plants. This can be observed from the plants by their slow rate of growth as well as their turning of color and shrinking towards drying up in extreme cases. The experiment showed that there is actually a strong effect of salt on the plants since the control experiment that received no treatments flourished and grew very fast in comparison to the rest of the trays.
