Custom Evolutionary Theory essay paper
The evolutionary theory has been used by a number of scholars to explain people’s actions. Such theorists affirm that the kind of behavior which human beings exhibit today has been molded through the evolution process from the original hominid. However, the premises of this theory have not been accepted by a group of scholars who have fronted various criticisms against the theory. This paper explains how the evolution concept of reproductive fitness is related to attraction and love in men and women. It will also criticize the evolutionary theory of attraction.
According to Kosova, Abney & Ober (2009), reproduction fitness reflects the ability of individuals to pass on their genes to the subsequent generation. They note that the evolutionary theory is closely related to the selection of human mate which refers to the values and characteristics man utilizes while making a choice of a mating partner. Such characteristics enable men to increase their reproductive success probability. The main premise to any psychology of evolution with reference to the selection of a mate is that human organisms usually tend to choose mates that maximize their reproductive success chances. According to Geary, Vigil & Byrd-Craven (2004), this success has been a key determinant on the kind of people individuals are attracted to and those they will ultimately love.
Even though evolutionary psychology has proven to be a powerful instrument for explanation of the human mating behavior, it has faced certain criticisms as well. The first criticism applies to sexual phenomena that have not deemed to yield any value of reproduction like in the cases of same-sex partnership and attraction of cross species like bestiality (Geary, Vigil & Byrd-Craven, 2004). Another criticism directed to this theory is based on the evolution theory. The critics have insisted that this makes the theory exposed to the bias of confirmation. According to them, this creates a situation where the individuals concerned seek for the information that confirms their theory at the same time ignoring any information considered irrelevant. Finally, Li, Bailey & Linsenmier (2002) also note that the theory has a weakness on its methodology. They argue that more of the past researches on mate preference have not been similar to the actual selection of human mate.
Irrespective of the criticisms, the evolutionary theory of attraction has continuously been used in explaining how people act and behave towards the opposite sex. With the increasing number of scholars being attracted to study of the human behavior towards the opposite sex, the theory will continue to be relevant.
