Incarceration for Nonviolent Drug Offenders in the United States

During the last years prison population in the United States has raised. It can be an attribute to the increasing rates of incarceration for nonviolent drug offenders and three-strike laws.

In the United States, straight rules may provoke the growth of prisoners, who are convicted to fines or to administrative penalties. Nonviolent drug offenders are under severe control of the police and receive crueler punishment than they deserve. Three-strike laws or habitual offender laws can be beneficial for the government and the police. The criminals who have committed crimes several times, face a harsher sentence. However, not everyone deserves such punishment. The main point of the law is to reduce the possibility of committing crimes.

On the one hand, increased methods of incarceration for nonviolent drug offenders are the best way to decrease the rate of dealers and to reduce drug distribution. On the other hand, such a forceful imprisonment of drug offenders, result into distracting the attention from another criminals. Fierce fight against drugs can be a reason for the increasing rate of other types of crime. Moreover, overpopulation in prison is not a positive effect for government. Increased costs on the prisons and the police department can provoke public discontent over the issue.

In my opinion, the police must concentrate on the introduction of the harsher ways to prevent the re-offending, but not to re-catching the criminals. Moreover, government should understand that focusing on one type of crimes the others stay unexposed. The rise of prison population in the United States will not be accepted by the society. Police should concentrate and allocate their efforts to solve other serious crimes.
