Problem description

Today the world has embraced technology to the point that it boasts of efficiency and optimum time and resource utilisation. Engineers as such have played a great role in making this state of technology be what it is. While looking at the work those engineers has done this paper looks into the emerging ethical issues that come with the development and the use of the robotics.

Robots are simply systematically programmed computer aided machines that carry out functions autonomously. The Japanese who are the undisputed popular developers and users or robots have made a great stride as concerns use of robots in the manufacturing industry. However with more research, innovations have been made resulting in developments of sophisticated robots that perform the tasks that have raised ethical concerns. The new sophisticated robots are able to perform functions such as taking care of the young ones, the disadvantaged and even the elderly. This has raised various ethical issues that are discussed below.

Parentage

The role of parentage has really been put to question as concerns use of robotics in child care. While robots are thought to be doing this function in a manner that is seen to be an alternative to the mothers’ direct care, sociologists argue that this in the long run will result in some disadvantage to the growing of the child. The use of the robot in child care has to do with the managerial aspects including saving of the costs and the efficiency. It also has to do with the inadequacy of the time that the parents could be faced with. Sociologists argue that children brought up and monitored closely by their parents are likely to have less sociological problems than those who happen to be away from their parents most of the time.

Elderly care

The use of the robotics in taking care of the elderly has also raised concerns as to the priority and the respect that the elderly are to be accorded. While one might argue that by providing robots to help the elderly would be in one way or the other a good gesture to our aging population, psychologists would argue that it does not work as efficient as would be a direct human mediated function.

Human beings are made be social and hence would be more comfortable to interact with fellow humans than machines. The robotics might also not be able to attend to other social needs such as loneliness which humans are to perform.

Health impact

Ethical considerations are being attached as to the levels of laziness that come as a result of the use of robotics. Today robots have been developed to perform such functions as general house chores. This leaves the humans who were initially to perform such functions in a comfort zone of sitting and watch as the robots do the works. The increase in the levels of health complications that are heart related especially in the developed countries is a worrying trend. While use of the robotics is not that wide spread, it s continued take up could result to increased casualties. This is not the case to the developing countries whose levels of embracing technology are still low. This is supported by the effect of computerisation and continued development and use of the ICTs (Shanks 97).

Religious considerations

While many would appreciate the work that the robots are doing, religious leaders would argue that use of the robots in performing functions meant for humans would entail disrespecting Gods order concerning what humans are to do. The manufacture of robots some of which takes the shape of a human with all humanlike features has even made this worse. However scientists argue that this does not hold water as the issue of God existing is just but a theory which cannot be substantiated.

Summary

While the world is quick in embracing the robotics, considerations have to be made on the impact to human life from all aspects. It is a fact that from an economic point of view robots are okay to use but the social aspect should also be put to consideration. The tasks performed by the robotics could make or break our society hence needs to be selectively applied.
