The excerpt is drawn from Plato’s Phaedo on 65a. This quotation as well as the entire prologue of Phaedocan be said as to the relationship between the body and soul. To be more specific, this quotation inquires the role of the physical body as one attempts to acquire aspects like knowledge. Further it questions whether the body becomes an obstacle or is it instrumental to the success. The main question is thus whether the body is inferior to the soul and hinders the latter from attaining its full abilities.

The specific role to be drawn from this quotation is taken from the entire context, as earlier noted, the relationship between the body and the soul. Plato makes it clear that the soul is a matter that one cannot either create or destroy. Thus, the main role of this excerpt is to draw the role of the soul to the human body. The quote, thus, is supposed trigger reader’s thoughts to question as to whether the body and soul are connected, and whether the soul is immortal as would be made to believe. Thus, it is apparent that the excerpt is more of a comparison as to the role of the body and the soul, and whether one is superior to the other. I also believe that the soul can live out of the body but be in passive form, that is cannot do its will unless it rests inside a body. The soul then is not only immortal but also omnipotent unlike the body which possesses neither of the two.

In my opinion, the issues raised in this context are of fundamental importance in understanding the human nature. I consider that the two, the body and the soul, are integral to the sustenance of the other. However, the soul is immortal, but cannot live in devoid of the body. The soul, thus, is insusceptible to its abilities, but can only achieve as much as the body can manage. In the end, the two cannot survive in unison of each other.
