Having been re-elected governor for the third consecutive time in 2010, Rick Perry’s popularity in the Texas was clearly unrivalled. In all the three tries that he has vied for the seat, he has won two out of three times with over 50% of the total votes while he garnered over 39% of the third time, while closest competitor garnered 29% of the vote. His 2010 re-election has made him the current longest continuously serving governor in the US and the second longest serving current governor in the United States after Iowa’s Terry Branstad. It is therefore clear that people like his political ways and appreciate his policies and views. The people of Texas however do not see critically the actual man that Rick is and they do not see the actual reality that he portrays but rather are deceived with this small outlook. They believe that who he portrays himself as is the right man for their governorship which is not completely true.
Rick Perry does not really stand for the interest of the Texan common man but his political smartness has always crowned him with popularity. During his campaigns in 2000, he proposed that Texas would not increase the taxes or debts on its citizens. This was of course welcome news to the people of Texas, and true to his word, taxes never went up to them. However, the state would later deeply get into debts for roads, increasing the mount almost by three times from 13.4 billion in 2001 when Perry came to power to 37.8 billion in 2011 (Plumer 2011). The state even sold $2 billion of bonds in 2011 after being ranked the first in federal borrowing in the US (Paul 2011). To the people of Texas, this may not be a cause to worry. However, it may later in years to come affect their income grossly due to increase in taxation and other levies when there would be ceilings on federal borrowing in the US.
Perry’s approach to the health issues has been taken positively by his people in Texas. He has publicly and strongly differed with the federal health care reform which he condemns as socialism on American soil. He has advocated for tort reform hat would restrict non-economic damages to the practitioners who made medically incorrect judgments (Blumenthal 2003: Paik, Black, Hyman, David & Silver 2010). This would be seen as a positive approach by the Texans but was in reality not as they thought. His proposal did not look to increase the number of practitioners or their availability in Texas. It has also not limited the cost of health care in Texas, making it not a very directly beneficial approach to the people of Texas. During his period as governor, Texas became among the states that had the most uninsured residents at 26% while had the lowest level of expectant mothers accessing prenatal care (Paik, Black, Hyman, David & Silver 2010). Texas has actually been ranked among the states with the lowest affordable health insurance since the high population that is uninsured is covered by the rest of the population that is insured, raising the cost of medical insurance by far.
Perry is a prolife and has strongly been opposed to abortions. He has in the recent past advocated for and signed many bills that would ensure that there was no abortion at all. He was opposed to abortions resulting from incest and rapes (Sack 2011). He however corrected himself a day later that abortion would be allowed if the life of the mother was in danger. This was not a very good view especially to women who underwent traumatic rape cases such as gag rapes at gun points. The birth of such children would be a reminder to the other of the ordeal they went through at a point in their lives, which might not auger well with their lives in general. Such a law would lead to children being born after such incidences to become sources of hate in the society since they would practically never be welcome in the families and lives of their mothers.
In 2007, February, Perry ordered an executive order that was supposed to ensure that all girls received a HPV vaccine which was supposed to ensure that they did not face the risk of cervical cancer (Paul, 2011). Te people saw this as a commendable move, but it was later reported that there was a big connection between the medical company involved and Perry. The company was said to have been in the funding of Perry’s campaign since 2001. It was therefore a political move and a form of reward to the company which was not supposed to be the case in a democratic country as the US.
Gun ownership has been an issue that has sparked many reactions in the US. There have been cases of young students, under the influence of drugs have shot and killed their mates and later themselves. Perry has signed many bills that allow an easier access to the arms. He terms it as a self defense issue and hi people fall for the idea. At the same time, he has been opposed to an automatic arrest of people who are held with marijuana. These two actions sound good to the people individually, but their merger may become disastrous (Yoder 2011). Drugged people are therefore accorded a chance to own arms keeping the lives of the people of Texas at risk, especially in public places (Thomas & Brant 2007).
It is therefore not disputable that Rick Perry’s approach to political and social matters may sound good and welcome to the people of Texas. It is however notable that most of these issues that he supports have dire consequences and that they might result into disasters in future (Paul 2011). The debts and some egocentric issues that he has been responsible for might, in later years, become costly to the people of Texas. However, due to his political and charismatic expertise, Perry has been able to convince the people that his stands are always in their favor. They people believe that he cares a lot about tem and that his actions are centered on their interest. This reality has allowed Governor Perry to get back into office and gunner many votes in the past and is set to continue with the same trend in future.
