The main aspects of policing operations and activities the paper will focus on are the following: the dangers in policing, the technology used in policing currently, the aspect of less than lethal weapons, the issues of Homeland Security and law enforcement relationships and conclude with the future of policing. Policing refers to the governmental department, which has the responsibility of controlling and regulating the affairs of a community. Precisely, policing has the obligation of sustaining order, detecting and preventing crime and implementing the law.
From the above definition of policing, it is evident that the job comes with lots of dangers because it entails a lot of dealing with the lawbreakers of the society. People who do not comply with the law are mostly the dangerous people in the society and, therefore, making the police operations have dangers of its own. There are several dangers police face while carrying out their duties and in this section, we focus on these dangers. There is the danger of receiving threats from convicts and ex-convicts the police officers maybe dealing with them or have dealt with in an effort to maintain and enforce law and order in a society.
The criminals will always lay their blame of being caught on the police officers who are arresting them and after serving, their sentence will seek revenge. This is so dangerous because the main revenge these criminals impose on their arresters is death. In the course, of their duty, police interact with a high level of criminals who may have weapons which could end the police’s life. The armed offenders will not hesitate to shoot the police officer arresting them and since it is their duty to do so, the police officers cannot evade their duty. There have been several cases of police deaths while on duty and this has been on the rise in the recent past. For instance, the year 2001 had a record of 237 police officers loosing their lives while on duty. The policemen put their life at risk every day while they protect the lives and property of the people in the society because that is part of the duty (Scaramella, Cox & McCamey, 2011).
Apart from the danger of losing their lives, police officers work under stressful and dangerous environments, which may pose a threat on their health. We are talking of working in a place where one is witness to murder, and other inhuman actions on a daily basis and these will result in stress and depression. Therefore, there is the danger of the police officer’s health being at risk because of his or her duties. To crown it all, the police officers receive minimal support from the society as the greatest part is of them being criticized how they carry out their duties. The idea of criticism of policing leads to the subject of the use of less-than-lethal weapons by the police force. There have been casings where police officers have been accused of using excess force while carrying out their duties.
In the event, such a thing occurs when there is a lot of questioning whether the use of excess force was necessary or not. As much as the police work is a known risky job, people still question their use of excess force-use of lethal weapons, therefore, coming up with suggestions on how the police can avoid use of deadly force. One of the main proposals is the use of the less-than-lethal weapons by the police while on duty. These are weapons which will not cause any deaths on the offenders. The less-than-lethal weapons include darts tipped with drugs, pepper spray, shotguns that fire nets, temporarily blinding strobe lights, bean bags filled with metal shot and the firing is from a converted grenade launcher and thermal guns that raise body temperature of the offenders so fast that they incapacitate them.
We now look at the police technology. With the recent increase, in crime rate all the world the police department cannot help but up there game when it comes to technology. Communication of criminal activities is through the increasing technology and the crimes are quickly changing to technology-based crimes. For these reasons, the police department is innovating technology, which can be useful in dealing with such crimes. Computer technology has been a benefit to law enforcement as it has created a completely new realm of criminal activity for law enforcers to deal with in this case, we are talking of internet predators and hackers. Police technology has increased the range and power of law enforcement to incarcerate offenders. Technology advancement has made it possible for communication, tracking and on site work to be done swiftly by the police officers. For instance, the police are using sophisticated laser scanning techniques to come up with virtual reconstructions of crime scenes. This technology helps the police officers to solve complex cases and juries make informed decisions. The technique creates highly 3-D reconstructions of crime scenes, which can be viewed on large plasma computer monitors. This technology is useful in outdoor crimes as it gives a clear picture of the crime scene (Dempsey & Forst, 2011).
In connection with the policing subject, there are the issues of Homeland Security and law enforcement relationships which are the prevention, preclusion and pre-emption of the United States territory. The whole idea of Homeland Security is the making of ethical decisions concerning law enforcement in any area under the US territory. It comprises of the following pillars: intelligence, community policing, planning and preparedness, and understanding terrorism. The idea of Homeland Security has been reluctantly clinched by the local, state, and tribal law enforcement agencies in an effort to curb crime. One of the common issues of Homeland Security and law enforcement relationships is the setting up of a personal burglar alarm by the American citizens. In the event, a person sets up the alarm the Homeland Security can attenuate the person.
What is the future of policing? Policing is an aspect of life that is here to stay and we can see more advancement being made in that area. The police force, despite its risky working environment, records a high number of recruits each year. This means that the police department is a weighty one in the society and will, therefore, continue growing. There are several proposals to improve policing ranging from technology to the working environment of the police officers. Police officers are being motivated in their work by increasing their salary, better working conditions, promotions, awards for the good work and more so recognition. Most police officers are currently undergoing intensive training in the technology area to enable them to fight with the increasing criminal activities. More noteworthy is the effort of reconnecting the police and the people so that policing can be effective in the societies. The current position is of people considering the police to be unscrupulous people who do not carry out their work well. This notion hampers the working of the police officers and, therefore, the future of policing looks at improving this relationship. The restructuring of the police department in technology, jurisdiction and work safety will make the future of policing a better one.
