Custom Same-Sex Marriage Problem essay paper
Same-sex marriage is one of the most controversial issues facing humanity. It has raised a number of questions like what its exact moral aspect would be given that it is always a conscious choice of two adults. Another question concerns the point at which the society’s responsibility to exert control in the social setup does ends. Finally, the religious groups have also continued to raise various questions concerning the issue. This paper summarizes various approaches to same-sex marriages including theological voluntaries, non-objectivist, and moral realist approaches.
Based on the controversies surrounding the legality of same-sex marriage, scholars have come up with different approaches in trying to explain its prevalence in the society. These approaches include the theological voluntaries approach, non-objectivist approach, and the moral realist approach. All these approaches strive to either justify or rebuke the practice. This paper summarizes the ideas of each approach.
Theological voluntarism approach affirms that since it is accepted by theologians that marriage involves an unconditional love between man and woman on matters of intimacy, there is no obstacle for the same definition to be applied to same-sex marriage. In other words, those who believe in the theory have argued that the way of thinking and making moral choices is a voluntary action.
On the other hand, non-objectivist approaches note that arguments on marriage equality are not persuasive because legalizing same-sex marriage could degenerate a call for plural marriages in the future. In the same way, non-objectivist proponents argue that there is no justification of limiting marriage to romance as the whole idea seems arbitrary. The approach proposes that the state should remain neutral in conceptualizing what is good or bad to individual relationship of marriage. However, such an approach is a single-sided view that conceptualizes only the good things about marriage.
Moral realist approach is the observation that gives moral values and duties an objective reality detached from the influence of any person or group of persons’ opinion about those values. Moral realists, therefore, argue that same-sex marriage should be legalized due to the fact that the interpretative rights of the parties towards marriage need to be respected (Sean, 2004).
In conclusion, I believe that the problem would be solved based on the utilitarian ethics theory. That is, the choice whether to involve or not to involve one’s self in same-sex marriage should be left to the individuals who have consented to unite and share their individual intimacy. Being a controversial issue that touches on human sexuality, there can be no universal or even societal consensus over the matter. Using the utilitarian ethics through letting the forces of nature take their course will be a better solution since nature only decides on the common good for a society.
