Summary of data results

The survey results presented in this paper contains data for adults (people over the age of 18 years) who participated in the survey. The team administered the survey to ten adult acquaintances.  The summary follows the sequence of the questions asked to the participants.

The age range of the interviewees was between the ages of 21 to 56. Most of them were from developing countries.  Majority felt that the continent most neo-colonized was Africa, even after more than 3 decades of formal independence.  Some interviewees felt that neo colonialism was justifiable in some circumstances since it brought about benefits to the third world countries from the developed countries.

Most of the participants cited cultural and economic influence as the major consequences of neo colonialism. The cultural colonialism affected values and perceptions of a third world country. Media, language, education, beliefs and religion seem to be influenced by the wealthy nations.  The economy was affected because neo colonialism influenced the rate of employment and the profit margin of the colony. They also felt that neo- colonialism activities had affected the work roles, statuses and the environment an immense deal.

Preliminary conclusions

The data generated through this survey was remarkably comprehensive. The social effect of neo-colonialism was clear. It has affected personal relationships through racist assumptions. The colonizers may despise and ostracize the third world countries. In addition, the third world countries may mistrust and misjudge the first world countries that colonize them. In addition, the statuses and work roles seem to be affected. The third world countries feel as stereotypes of dependency primitiveness and tribalism rather than creative minds. This dependency results in an attitude of intellectual, racial and cultural inferiority (Werbner, 1996).

The environment seems to be affected too through investment by multinational corporations that cause ecological/ environmental devastation. This greatly affects the populations that inhabit the neo colonies. Example of environmental effect is over fishing in the Western Africa countries by developed countries. The economy too got affected. The developed countries usually give the developing countries loans through international financial institutions. The weaker nation has to be forced to take steps favourable to the interests of the financial institution. In addition, the colonizers take advantage of cheap labour and raw materials and the developing countries cannot develop their own economies. Privatization of natural resources leads to unemployment and poverty.

The culture was influenced through change in the way of life, beliefs and values. The ways of the first world countries seem better than the indigenous ways and are held in high esteem. In the first world countries, neo colonialism provides profit from raw materials and cheap labor, while in underdeveloped countries; it serves as positive modernizing force for development.  The neo-colonized country gets affected and influenced through personal relationships, work roles, statuses, identified social groups, cultures & economy and environment aspects.
