A peaceful coexistence is all that people need to lead a happy life on earth. However, social problems have proven to be the sole barrier towards having a world where everybody lives in harmony with one other. The commonest social problems include conflict between individuals and different ethnic groups, crime and juvenile delinquency, use of drugs, sexual behaviors, politics, inequality, and race. Over and over again, these problems have proven to be very detrimental to the well-being of humanity hence everybody would wish away the mere existence of such problems. This paper therefore attempts to highlight various social problems in the United States.

Discrimination is the most significant social problem in the U.S. as discussed in the 2012 Journal of Social Issues (JSI). Difference in race, gender, religion, and nation of origin marks the pinnacle of discrimination in the U.S. The effects of discrimination of any kind are numerous and far reaching. According to the JSI, discrimination has greatly distorted the employment patterns in U.S. because employers have the predilection of favoring employees from one particular race, gender or religion. The U.S. healthcare sector is not spared by discrimination in the sense that there are disparities in how the whites and blacks are treated- a phenomenon that the journal attributes to higher rates of mortality among the African Americans compared to the white counterparts.  JSI further hypothesizes that racial differences has deeply infiltrated the police department and it is the root cause of discrimination against the non-natives within the systems of justice in U.S.

Although many would view social events such as world games as an international platform of global racial integration, JSI points it out that players discriminate against each other on the racial basis whereby white players disregard the black ones. The article presents several incidences where players of American or European origins refuse to shake hands with black players especially in English premier league. Racial discrimination, therefore, remains the main cause of inequality among different ethnic groups in the U.S.

The University of California Press Journal (UCPJ) is equally fundamental in documenting a whole range of social problems in U.S. such as conflict, drinking and drugs, racial and ethnic minorities, health policies and health services, sexual behavior, poverty, youth, aging, crime and politics. The journal analyses the causes of social problems and how they can solved. The journal is categorical that the escalating crime rates in the U.S. results from the gang activities of the unemployed youth and that the jobless youths engage in criminal gang activities such as armed robberies so as to earn a living. Despite the ongoing economic recession that hit the American economy like no other, UCPJ makes record straight that racial discrimination has a direct hand on the intolerable rates of unemployment among the Black, Hispanic and Latino youth in the United States of America. This explains why poverty is especially high among the black Americans compared to the whites.

According to UCPJ, gender equality remains a pipe dream in the U.S. courtesy of gender discrimination. The journal documents that technical fields of practice like engineering are still dominated by men in the post-modern United States despite the high number of female professionals graduating from colleges and universities. This presents the most pronounced forms of gender based discrimination in the United States of American and it heavily contributes to the social problem of unequal income levels between the sexes and domestic violence in the long run. In addition, the journal examines discrimination on the basis of body size and its effects on income levels given that U.S. population has both the obese and the non-obese whereby the obese are characterized by overweight and plump body size compared to the non-obese. The journal observes that obesity forms the basis of discrimination in employment sector because the obese are often locked out of employment opportunities on the assumption of their unproductivity at the workplace.

Journal of Health and Societal Behavior (JHSB) comes in handy in examining the social problems in the healthcare centers. Racism in healthcare units is a prime factor of continuous ill health among the minorities in the United States. As explained in the article, the low income earning blacks have limited access to medical care because their meager incomes do not allow them to acquire costly healthcare insurance policies. The journal goes on to add that health and financial planning is done by the well to do American policy makers, from the rich neighborhoods, who do not consider the interests of the poor Asian-Americans and African-Americans from poor socio-economic backgrounds in the healthcare planning processes.

In the same manner, the Journal of Sports and Social Issues examines the various social problems in sports. It features historical tension and violence in sports between Korea and Japan and during the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in United States. Considering a series of sensationalized tension in the Korean and U.S. media reports, the journal examines the educational problems encountered by student-athlete such as inadequate time for proper studies and the physical and sexual abuse committed by coaches and trainers against the aspiring female athletes. Further, appointment of sports officials in the universities and public colleges is based on religion- a trend that is causing tension in the sports sector. Finally the journal presents qualitative findings about what professional footballers and their families experience due to relocation. Job relocation is a common phenomenon in football since players switch clubs located in different geographical places posing a great challenge to the family in terms of the duration that they take to acclimatize.

Discussion and Conclusion

Social problems are the major cause of inequality in different organizations, institutions and countries. Social issues such as discrimination brought about by race and gender difference plays a bigger role towards segregation between different ethnic, racial and national groups. Social problems exist in all the organizations ranging from educational institutions, places of work, games and families. In the educational institutions, for instance, some schools tend to favor a specific group of individual barring the minorities from obtaining quality education.

Gender discrimination plays a big role in denying female jobs in the employment sector since the males are considered more active than the females even though both attend the same colleges and universities. Racial discrimination, on one hand, envisages underrepresentation of black Americans in the employment sector. Unemployment results into the increase in the crime rates in U.S. because the few learned members of the minority groups cannot secure employment due to discrimination. Surprisingly enough, discrimination is also evident in sports. Therefore, social problems permeates shakes to the core all spheres of human life in the United States.

Social problem in the U.S. can be reduced by affirmative action so that the minorities can be represented in political, social and economic sectors. In terms of college admission, fixed number of admissions into the U.S. government schools should be reserved for the minorities. In the employment sector, employers should recruit employees based on the merits regardless of race, gender or nationality. Politics is not exceptional in minority representation. The government should enact laws that will ensure that the minorities ascend to higher positions in politics. In a nutshell, social problems put humanity at risk of never ending humanitarian crises.
