Custom Dealey Plaza essay paper
Studies show that Dealey Plaza is an area covering a section of Dallas city in Texas. Its fame came because of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy incident. Since then it became the historic zone or district within the city after a national declaration naming it a historic site following the assassination. The plaza was named after a newspaperman George Dealey. Dealey plaza lies on the west downtown side of Dallas district. It also has the convergence of three important streets within its area. These are Main Street, Elm Street, and the Commerce Street. These three streets comprise a small and it is triangular area, where Elm and Main streets form the two sides of the triangle and Houston Street forms the other side to complete the triangle (Foote 2).
Relating to Giles (3) the historic aspect of Dealey plaza discussion unveils the history of Dealey plaza before and after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the functions of various sections or floors in the building. History reveals that Dealey plaza is the origin or part of the original point where Dallas city began in the 1840s. The park celebrates and boasts of successful planning after President Roosevelt successfully constructed the familiar triple underpass and the concrete colonnades. Dealey plaza serves as the gateway to Dallas city and it is the symbol of civil pride since the successful construction spearheaded by George Dealey who was the then civil leader. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s tainted the image of the plaza. It became a site for international recognition of murder of a higher order. Dealey plaza became a National Historical Landmark District in 1993, this acknowledges the place where John F Kennedy died and it is significant in the United States history.
The building has various uses and this is categorized by floors, for instance, the sixth floor houses a museum. It was opened in 1989 on the President`s Day and it was dedicated to the legacy and life of the assassinated President JF Kennedy. It occupies the former Texas State School Book Depository. The floor has various sections that document specific features of the catastrophic event. Some sections have television and movie interviews that cover on scene reporters and witnesses of the horrific event, and from the elevator, it leads to the foyer where memory books were kept and finally the left side contains the alleged rifle used at the crime scene. Furthermore, the Museum has other sections that show how the world and the nation in particular reacted to the assassination of JF Kennedy. These majorly comprise of newspapers and newscast on television networks, including individual photographs. The Museum also has handbills, alleged to have been passed out by the perpetrator Oswald; the bills describe Kennedy as ‘a traitor’ and a ‘hands off Cuba’ after he had a soft spot for Cuba. The southern corner in the Museum, is situated the window that Oswald shot at the President and the window is now known as the ‘Sniper’s Nest’. This stands out as the most important of the exhibits in the Museum (Giles 10).
According to Forte (9), the seventh floor is almost empty but comprises a significant collection of photographs, articles, and eyewitness accounts that are only found here. Most of the space the floor serves guest speakers, educational programs, and large gatherings. The seventh floor holds the museum’s largest Kennedy assassination related periodicals documents, and books in the whole world. In general, the seventh floor comprises of more than 34500 items never seen before anywhere, this makes the museum an important part of the American history and more specific, the history of Dallas city. In conclusion, Dealey plaza is the center point when relating to John FK assassination and the state of the nation at that time compared to this days. This particular site is important for international rein relation to tourists and socio-economic impacts since the assassination took place in 1963.
