Writing in the 1950s, Whyte argued that a new social ethic had come to permeate American business that was driving out the old values of individualism and the Protestant work ethic.   What values characterized this new corporate ethos?

According to Whyte, the new social ethic overcame the old traditional social responsibility in which one had the highest mode of individualism. Likewise the old traditional protestant ethics was eluded by the new values which were being implemented by the organization; but the organization did not come into terms of agreeing that the change of their actions was creating new changes. Among the new values which changed were thrift and the survival for the fittest. According to Whyte, the role which was played by the organization brought in about many different changes which were viewed differently by members of the American unions, protestant leaders and other people of the society. The protestant ethics came to personal value, a person had to ask himself whether he saves the 10% or it will make him rich without giving it to the church, this raised more concerns like if I am rich and I want to be successful, then I have the desire to go to the top and reach the limits of the rich.

How did Whyte explain the rise of the new corporate ethos?

The rise of new corporations was the question of new personal individualism of working in groups. If social ties are stronger, among the common people with the same agendas like in the organization, the idea and perspective of achieving personal success is more convincing strategy which introduces new ethics.

What was Whyte’s opinion of the new ethos?

Whyte’s opinion in regarding the new ethics is more like a personal reaction of what makes the organizational ethical changes. The fundamental reactions which were brought about by the acting changes of the organization, brought about different views like the frustrations of personal success, creativity and the anonymity of achievement from individualism.

Your reaction?

Therefore, my reaction is the same like Whyte’s perspective; sometimes we may run or want changes, but what are the reactions to this change from the view of an individual perspective of success and failure.
