Custom World on Fire essay paper
The book titled “World on Fire” was written in the year two thousand and two by Amy Chua, the professor of the University of Yale. It entails ethnic divisions in relation to not only economic systems in various civilizations but also various systems of the government. In addition the book discusses sociological divisions in relation to the aforementioned systems. The book in addition discusses the outcome of exportation of free market democracy. She has stated that the outcome is ethnic hatred and also volatility in the world. Amy Chua is actually an author who is exact. She has made it apparent that she isn’t heaping any sort of blame to certain ethnic groups found in various parts of the world that are wealthy for the aggression they experience from non-wealthy ethnic groups. At the same time, she is not heaping blame capitalism for any form of mass killing of people. She stresses these points now and then in this book. This book has two hundred and fifty six pages (Chua, 2002).
Chua has narrated the various reasons behind certain ethnic minorities dominating specific markets. One of the reasons is as due to colonial repression. Another possible reason as stated by Chua is due to the civilization which is followed by a certain ethnic minority and even due to family networks. In the modern world, the USA is minority which dominates the markets of many countries of the world especially in the developing countries. The domination of USA more so in the military and in politics is seen as a possible source of hatred. Chua has argued that she has been at the forefront of supporting markets all over the world. She also argues that she has been attempting to foster democracy all over the world. However she supports these aspects as long as they attempt to put in place measures which are likely to bring about equitable distribution of wealth. She argued that it is difficult to have in place equitable distribution of wealth if rampant corruption exists in a particular society (The Power of the Ethnic Minority, 2004).
Amy Chua started writing the book by indicated that small ethnic groups which are marginal and which are found in a number of developing countries such as Kenya and Nigeria benefits from economic power which is basically unevenly distributed. She suggests that this scenario does not exist in the developed nations of the world. She stated that in the developed nations, these small ethnic groups occupy a situation which is rather different from that found in the developed countries. According to her, this is quite disadvantageous. She stated various examples all over the world. The first example is south East Asia.
In the country of Philippine, one percent of the population is made up of the Chinese. Moreover, more than half of the wealth of this country belongs to this Chinese. Thus the Chinese who are a minority group in Philippine dominate the economy of this country. Moreover, the Chinese are small in number in countries such as Indonesia, Laos and even Indonesia and yet they dominate the economies of these particular countries. In addition, the Chinese are small in number in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia and yet they dominate the economy of these particular countries. Chua argued that it is apparent that small ethnic groups who are wealthy and supreme in the economy of a particular country are frequently disliked. She further argued that if the ethnicity of the minority groups is dissimilar and on every part of a particular country, then the dislike can be hazardous. For instance in the Philippine, many Philippines are employed by the Chinese and yet no Chinese is employed by a Filipino. Majority of the industries and business enterprises are owned and managed by the Chinese. Majority of the billionaires in Philippines are Chinese. Many of the jobs which require no skill are done by the Filipinos. At the Philippines, the Chinese and Filipinos do not intermarry. The situation is made worse by the fact these two ethnic intermix socially rarely. Chua argued that these differences have widened greatly with the onset of globalization and as a result of changes in the market which have been motivated by the west. This instance is also prevalent in the Latin America (The Power of the Ethnic Minority, 2004).
There is a small minority ethnic group in Latin America by the name white. This minority group has for a long time dominated the economy and even the economy of this region. In addition, the white ethnic minority have dominated the civilization of this particular region. As far as East Asia is concerned, the factor behind the Chinese minority dislike is the presence of a political force which has been considered to be much powerful. In the Latin America, ethnic dislike against the whites’ minority has been quite small. However, the class dislike is seen to be more prevalent. Moreover, the white have dominated the markets of countries of Southern Africa for quite a while. The whites have dominated the economy of South Africa. This is in spite of the fact that many South Africans have been dominating the economy of their own country. The whites in addition have dominated the markets of Zimbabwe which is a Southern African country (Institute of International studies, UC Berkeley, 2004).
Another perfect example of a minority group which has dominated the market of Russia as argued by Chua is the Jews. The population of Jewish community is quite small. However, in Russia most of the managers who run large corporations in Russia are Jewish. The markets of two West African countries to be precise Gambia and Sierra Leon have for a long time been dominated by the Lebanese who are small in number. In Nigeria, the Ibos have dominated the market. The same case exists in East Africa. The kikuyu and the Indians have for along time dominated the market in Kenya. The Indians in addition who are an elite group in Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda have for a long time dominated the markets of these Eastern African countries. Most of the large business enterprises and even the industries are owned and managed by the Indians.
In accordance with Chua, political volatility in countries whose economies are dominated by a small minority group has been to a large extend been fuelled by the differences which exist between the wellbeing of the small minority group and the deplorable condition of the majority group. It is well known that ethnicity has remained to be a thorny issue in some countries of the world. Ethnicity has a long history and Chua believes that it is a product of human imagination. The consequences of ethnicity are in despicable. Chua narrates her own experience. Her aunt resided in Manila in the Philippine. She was wealthy and was killed by her chauffeur who was a Philippine. She argued that such kind of an incidence makes ethnicity has made it difficult to comprehend and even evade it (The Power of the Ethnic Minority, 2004).
Chua in addition narrated the Rwandan genocide in which more than eight hundred thousand Tutsis were massacred. This atrocity occurred in the year nineteen hundred and ninety four and it is believed to have been executed by the ethnic Hutus. She has also stated the complaints which were lodged by the Serbians against the Croats. She believes that all this mishaps were triggered by the fact that the Tutsis and Serbs dominated the markets of their respective countries. Chua pinpointed that ethnicity has continued to be a thorny issue especially in African counties. In America the incidences of ethnicity are rare. In addition, negative ethnicity is rare in Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea. Taiwan and China are also countries found in Asia in which ethnicity is rare. The major contributing factor is the fact that in these countries there aren’t many ethnic groups and thus the language spoken by all citizens is uniform. These counties are also deemed to be powerful economically. The aspect of globalization has made worse the differences in richness which occur amongst the various ethnic groups. The ethnic minorities are deemed to gain a lot as a result of globalization. This has aggravated volatility in the concerned countries. Chua gives an example of Indonesia. The then leader of this country, Suharto relinquished power and the outcome was anti-Chinese rebellions. These rebellions were much severe than ever.
The notion of free markets has been misunderstood by many people. This is according to Chua. She argued that this notion of free markets has been a source of calamities. Chua in addition argued that the postulation of the term democracy by people who reside in America and Europe is not well comprehended. The west believes that democracy creates a more laissez-faire society and also a society which is broadminded. However the opposite could be right if this particular society is characterized by ethnicity cleavage which is deep rooted. Thus the anti- Chinese rebellions indicated that the majority to be precise the Indonesians expressed great dislike to the minorities to be precise the Chinese. The same case existed in Zimbabwe whereby the current president, Robert Mugabe took away farms which belonged to the whites. The whites were a minority group in this country who owned large parcels of land (The Power of the Ethnic Minority, 2004).
Chua stated that free markets were liable to make worse ethnic divisions. Chua in addition lamented that democracy can make the majority group to become hostile towards the minority group. It has been stated that democracy and free markets makes a virtuous circle. However, according to Chua, this notion is inaccurate. She based her argument on the events which took place a number of years ago in western countries. For instance the capitalism factor which predates the milestone that has been brought about by democracy. The attainment of democracy meant that the market was satisfied with redistribution and the wellbeing state prevailed. This book does not only discuss ethnicity. Chua has actually handled ethnicity with a lot of truthfulness. She has expressed ethnic divisions explicitly without fear or favor. Moreover, she has handled the issue of racism with integrity. Chua is pragmatic with these two issues to be exact ethnic divisions and racism.
The last portion of the book takes a new twist. Chua indicated that the dispute which has been witnessed in the Middle East countries should indeed be viewed as a dispute amongst the neighboring countries of this region. According to her, Israel is dominates the market in this region and that the Jews are a minority group. The Arabs who are the majority group are destitute. She further laments that the Arab countries keep on becoming destitute.
Lastly, Chua has debated the stance taken by the USA in the modern day post cold combat. She argued that the USA is analogues to an ethnic minority who dominate a particular market. This explains according to her why the USA was attacked on 11th September in the year two thousand and one. In addition, it explains why the USA has received sympathy from the third world war after the occurrence of this unfortunate event. Many countries in Europe and America still do not acknowledge the significance of the issue of ethnicity. This could be as a result of the fact that many of these countries have superior technology and even infrastructure in comparison with other nations of the world. In addition, the whites are not frequently biased on the basis of their skin color. However few cases exists for instance the Jews. The whites have continued to take pleasure in the gains presented by ethnic advantage (Wimmer, 2006).
Many books concerning the topic of globalization do exist. These books do discuss concepts which are related. However, the world on fire book which was authored by Amy Chua is exceptional. It is a book in which globalization is debated in the context of ethnicity. Many of the books regarding globalization have been authored by the whites who are based or whose roots are western countries. Amy Chua roots are in China and Philippine.
To add to this, not so much Chinese literature on ethnicity is available. Thus, this book is regarded as being precious. This is due to the fact that Amy Chua has presented a topic which is full of facts. Moreover, these facts convince many people.
In actual fact, many people who have read this book will be delighted at the end of the day. This is due to the fact that ethnicity has been discussed as an organizing theory which is perceived to be basic.
However, this book has received several criticisms from a number of writers. Some have suggested that the facts presented by Amy Chua in her book are likely spur violence amongst various ethnic groups in a particular country. They have cited the inspiration of pure racism as a perfect living example. Furthermore, it has been argued that Amy Chua presented facts which showed that it is impossible for many governments to avert aggression against certain people. These are the people who have been made demonic by other people. Thus it is argued that this information isn’t new.
