Development of Microfilm in Modern Times

With the continuous development of modern society, the pace of life continues to accelerate, the people’s attention has always been aroused to pieces of micro-fiction, micro-blog, micro-film, and micro-channel. In this context, a series of “mini-things” eventually came up, they still appear just to settle up with the strong demand for many people to pursue their personal liberation and also self-expression. The microfilm originally was developed in the 1800s, which did not give rise to any significance until the late 1920s, (Baker, 2001). George McCarthy, a banker once held the patent for the machine that was able to create that film after its development. That specific machine was a special camera, which took pictures and then developed into black and white film. The microfilm is capable of resisting deterioration and helping storage, which in turn saves space.

Then in 1928, Eastman Kodak also purchased the right to that special machine, which catapulted the microfilm into the business market. The New York Times in the 1930s has started to create copies of daily newspapers in an effort to store it for later use (Jamison, 1988). However, that development has deteriorated rapidly. As a result, the newspaper decided to switch to the development of microfilm. Harvard University started a comprehensive recording program, (Vickie and Ann, 1990). It works today and involves copies of newspapers from various countries in the world onto microfilm. There are two principal forms of film in the microfilm, namely, the silver halide film and vesicular film. The former is much like the traditional film. A process of silver emulsion on a polyester strip is used to present the image. On the other hand, in the vesicular film, the microscopic bubbles are used to create the image. 

The popularity of microfilm lies in mainly three main aspects. First, the audience rise of self-awareness, which is a prerequisite for the development of microfilms. With the continuous improvement of the quality of the audience, the unprecedented rise of self-consciousness made the straightforward, blunt, monotonous didactic hard advertising campaign become increasingly inefficient, making the advertisers adopt a more humane, flexible, and more receptive marketing (Metcalf 1996). In this context, microfilm, the cross-border product of the film and advertising has become the new darling of the industry. Second to the list is the rapid development of Internet. The microfilm is the inevitable product of the age of the Internet. The continuous development of network technology is all material foundation and historical conditions for the development of microfilm. We can say that the microfilm is the inevitable product of the Web 2.0 era. Finally, the renowned developed mobile terminal. Mobile terminal fueled the rise of the micro-film. With the 3G era, the arrival of mobile phones, Tablet PC, PSP, mobile terminal is no longer a simple communication tool, information terminal began to evolve.
