“John Tucker Must Die” is an American teenager comedy film released in the theatres on July 28th, 2006, and was on DVD November on 14th, 2006. The film was directed by Betty Thomas and produced by Bob Cooper. The actors starring in the movie are Jesse Metcalfe, ArielleKebbel, SophiaBush, AshantiDoughlas, JennyMcCarthy, Britney Snow and Penn Badgley. The film is rated PG-13 and is 89 minutes long. The major themes of the movie are revenge and honesty.
The film shows us a trio of girls, played by the actors Arielle Kebbel, Sophia Bush, and Ashanti, who gang up to break the heart of a popular basketball star John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe). This is after they discover he has been secretly dating all of them, that they use a beautiful Kate (Britney Snow) in order to publicly destroy him. However, at the end she does not revenge as intended, and John Tucker learns to be honest. The plot deals with games that teenagers play on one another while dating. The storyline is good but the derivative and transparent nature is poor.
Generally, the movie is moderately good but some parts have some very obvious scenes, and John Tucker is not heartbroken at the end as the girls planned. The film maker would have at least made sure the protagonist ended up heartbroken to clearly bringing out the lesson he learned on honesty.
The movie is based on real life situation as it shows the situation most teenagers come into. According to Sander (2002), “No more tears now, I will think upon revenge by Mary Queen of Scott’s” (p.56). Therefore, the movie did not reach a logical climax and the plot was too fast. John Tucker would have learned his lesson the hard way.
Despite minor shortcomings, “John Tucker Must Die”, being an ultimate revenge fantasy, is a moderately fanny teen comedy with a few flashes of humor. It actually reminds us that it’s cool to be ourselves and honesty is the best policy. This movie is worth spending your 89 minutes watching it.
