A full time employee shall be granted bereavement leave with pay, in agreement with this policy. The policy shall be adhered to by the employer and employee under any circumstance.
In occurrence of death of an employee’s immediate family, an employee shall be accorded funeral leave with pay up to a maximum of five working days.
Immediate family members include the following:
Immediate family members defined by this policy include an employee’s parents, spouse, siblings, step-parents, children, step-children, father-in-law, mother-in-law, grandparents, a person who resides in the employee’s household or other person who the employee has loco parentis relationship.
(Loco parentis relationship means that the employee has day-to-day responsibilities for that person in terms of financial support. It is not necessary that the employee has biological or legal relationship).
If employee requires extensive travel time, additional two days off may be granted with pay. Extensive travel is defined as travelling a distance greater than 90 miles one way. Total funeral leave days shall be up to a maximum of 7 days.
Non-immediate family member bereavement leave
An employee shall be allowed a maximum of two days funeral leave with pay for the death of non-immediate family member.
Non immediate family member include aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, parent of a person who resides with the employee’s household, a child of a person who resides in the employee’s household or any other close member of the employee.
Departmental head is responsible for receiving funeral leave requests and scheduling the time when an employee is on leave. Upon receiving the request, the departmental head shall be required to act as soon as possible.
