The very essay is focusing the three leadership styles i.e. transformational leadership, transactional leadership and laissez faire in a nursing residential home in UK and this home is for elder residents with dementia. In the essay the discussion is based on the three leadership styles which are stated above and the impact of these styles on the overall personality of the managing individual in nursing environment.
In order to fully understand the leadership styles there is the need to evaluate the overall management system, the way of planning and the organizational structure. The very term of leadership is prevailing in the nursing trade for the last many years. Different people have considered them as the driving elements which are considered more crucial for the success and failure of a particular organization (Schein, 2004). Lot of study material is available on the organizational structure and leadership paradigm but unfortunately the relationship between them is still vague or unclear. Most of the hospitals and nursing residential homes don’t possess emergency response procedure and they have to rely on their existing experienced manpower having knowledge of most of the operations of nursing industry or they possess some leadership skills. In the residential homes, where elder residents with dementia are living, there is a dire need to take care of all disasters which may happen naturally or unwontedly. So there is the need that in such scenarios if an experience nurse or leader will not be there at the time of disaster then it would become very difficult for other people to handle the situation. So there is the need of a firm sort of relationship between leadership and organizational culture or structure. In most of the hospitals or nursing homes the disaster response procedures the commanding infrastructure is not reliable enough so the authorities have to rely on the experts who are well familiar with the operations in a nursing home or hospital (Zane, Prestipino, 2004).
Most of the researchers in past were describing mainly the leadership role of chief nurse and they have given very little attention to first line nursing management. In our research we are mainly focusing the three major forms of leadership i.e. transformational leadership, transactional leadership and laissez faire. According to Antonakis et al., 2003; Avolio & Bass, 2004 the three styles are defined as:
Transformation (TF) Leadership is the ability to influence others toward achievement of extraordinary goals by changing the followers’ beliefs, values, and needs.
Transactional (TS) Leadership is the exchange process based on the fulfillment of contractual obligations and is typically implemented by setting objectives, monitoring, and controlling outcomes.
Non-Transactional Laissez-faire (LF) represents the absence of a purposeful interaction between the leader and the follower, in which the leader avoids making decisions, abdicates responsibility, and does not use his or her authority. It is considered active to the extent the leader “chooses” to avoid taking action.
In most of the famous organizations the first line management tries to present or demonstrate the transformational leadership behaviors (Al-Mailam, 2005; Block, 2003). It is the responsibility of the nurses that they must show the Transformational leadership. According to the author that it is the responsibility of the nurse that the nurse must try to adopt such a policy which would help in gaining more response in terms of efficiency while using very few resources, she must try to convert other staff into certain type of leadership mode, and it is also the responsibility of a nurse that nurse try to motivate the other staff that you must do the job for the good will of the organization (Ohman, 2000; Robbins & Davidhizar, 2007).
It is the duty of the nurses to deal with conflicts and manage them on daily basis and depending upon the situation nurses choose a proper conflict management solution or mode in order to pacify the problem and the only mode is the compromise mode. The solution which is provided for a conflict is mainly based on the effectiveness or leadership ability of a nurse. In conflict management case most of the nurses adopt the transformational leadership instead of transactional style of leadership. In case of a nursing residential home where elder people were residing there are mostly those conflicts which arise due to violence among elder people so nurses try to influence them in order to achieve the goal which is their mental satisfaction. According to the authors the nurses who use the transformational leadership styles they yield more positive results for their organization than the other ones (Robbins & Davidhizar, 2007).
The laissez-faire leadership style of a nurse does not prove fruitful in a nursing home because if the nurse manager or head nurse is not going to take its interest in the operations then the ability of the nursing staff also decreases slowly and people leave their interests in the routine work and they also don’t try to exercise their own powers so in a nursing scenario of a hospital scenario this type of leadership is not an effective one rather the transformational style is more suitable with some authority. The laissez-faire can only be exercised in leisure or during a break time in order to relax your staff and it’s also good in order to create good relationships of a leader with the working staff other wise laissez-faire is not good because it is cause of leadership substitution effect which is the result of an irrelevant or an immature leadership (Swenson, 2000; Kerr & Jermier, 1978; Dionne, Yammarino, Atwater & James, 2002)
