Task environment refers to the actions, selections, choices as well as outcomes a given user has for a given chore or project. The task environment of a cellular phone company does not contain the same elements as that of a Government Welfare Company because a cellular phone company’s aims at profit maximization, so its focus will revolve around incurring the least cost while making maximum profits. On the other hand a Government Welfare agency primary goal is to provide services that are essential for the welfare of people and to improve their standard of living.

Cultural values of individualism and power distance

Individualism refers to the societal aspect of reinforcing individual importance as well as the virtue of self-reliance and personal autonomy. In societies with high individualism level, individuals tend to have weak interpersonal relationship as opposed to individuals in collectivist societies.

Power distance is the degree to which the less influential and less powerful members of organizations inside a country expect and consent that power is distributed unevenly. It’s the extent of equality or inequality amongst people in a particular society. A society with a high Power Distance score accepts and maintains inequalities between people, for instance in societies that follow the caste system portray a very high level of power distance. A low power distance shows that a society does not emphasizes on differences in individual’s social status, wealth or power. Equality is considered as the collective objective of society and upward mobility is widespread.

Effect on organization design and management processes

High level of individualism brings forth inclusion of personal values and choices in the organizations management which may not be of benefit to the organization .High individualistic people are self-reliant and consider their decisions as superior and are less likely to contend to other peoples views. Low individualism in a society strengthens the ties between members of the organization and this leads to collective responsibility as well as good inter-personal relationship.

A high degree of power distance in an organization does not give room for those in low management level to give their opinions and views freely and therefore individual as well as the organization’s growth is prohibited. Mostly the less influential and less powerful people in the organization feel oppressed and their input in the organization welfare and growth decreases.
