Ratan Tata was born on 28th December 1937 in Mumbai in a Gujarati Parsi speaking family. He was the grandson of Jamshedji Tata, the founder of Tata Group. Ratan Tata had a very troubled childhood as his parents separated when he was seven. He did his degree in architecture and then joined the Tata Group company TISCO(Tata Iron and Steel Company) in 1962. He did management from Harvard and started working for the Tata Group. In 1991 he took charge as the Chairman of the Tata Group from JRD Tata. From then he never looked back and took the Tata Group to a new horizon. The Tata Group is one of the largest business groups in India. It is almost in every field like Automobiles, Information Technology, Industrial Automation, Chemicals, and much more. The Tata Group had been in news for several giant events like the launch of the cheapest car Nano, the largest takeover event, which is the acquisition of Corus the Anglo-Dutch Steel Company by Tata Steel. With Ratan Tata as the Chairman of the Tata group the group reached new horizons in spite of the challenges faced and troubles posed by the changing Indian economy. In the earlier times the Tata Group lacked focus as it was engaged in several unrelated businesses.
Ratan Tata took several reformative steps which helped the group to overcome all the challenges faced by the business in the changing economy. He took several revolutionary steps like resizing of the companies, exiting the businesses that are not well, and changing the work culture and many more. During his time there had been tough times like global recession but he still managed to keep the Tata Group at the position it is. He took several good steps like the enforcement of retirement age in Tata Group to allow fresh talent show their abilities and at the same time remove the dependency and dominance of people at higher position. The implementation of TBEM (Tata Business Excellence Model) frame work to evaluate the companies with respect to certain predefined parameters. In this companies were evaluated on the basis of several criteria like Strategic planning, effective leadership, Customer and market focus etc. Above this he implemented measures to enhance the productivity and capital asset management. He has a very good approach towards business. He said that if a company of the Tata Group is not among the top three players in the industry then this is a matter of concern and steps should be taken to bring them up and if it is not possible just think of exiting the business. This shows his way of rational thinking. He instituted the performance goals and the Tata Code of Conduct. He made the use of a single logo for the entire Tata Group of Companies in 1999 to build a single brand image. Tata group of companies started the expansion of business in the global markets and targeting the emerging markets. Many innovative products were launched by Tata to lead the markets. Several overseas ventures were made. Ratan Tata is also very effective in handling of controversial situations as we can see the controversies during the setup of plant for Nano Manufacturing. Thus we can say that the Tata Group saw several positive changes during the Chairmanship of Ratan Tata and has reached invincible heights.
