BOMB THREAT CALL PROCEDURES

Important Information:

  • Generally, bomb threats are delivered through phone calls.
  • Any kind of a bomb threat is serious and should be treated with the urgency it deserves till proven otherwise.
  • In the event of a bomb threat call, the receiver should remain calm but act quickly so as to collect all needed information from the caller with the checklist provided at the end of this manual.

 What to do in case a bomb threat call is received

In case a bomb threat is delivered through phone remember to do the following:

  1. Remain calm
  2. Signal another person- give him/her a note saying “Bomb threat-Call Police or 991.” If you are alone and colleagues do not show up during the call, notify the authorities and call Police immediately after the caller hangs up the phone.
  3. Try to keep the caller on the line for the longest possible time. Leave the line open even if the caller hangs up. NEVER HANG UP on the caller no matter how terrified you might appear to be.
  4. Listen to the caller carefully without interrupting the call. Show interest in his/her message and remain courteous throughout the conversation.
  5. Keep the telephone conversation going for as long as possible and let the caller do much of the talking to enable you gather all the required relevant information (as provided in the checklist).
  6. If the receiving phone has a display of the caller ID, record the number and other visible details of the incoming call.
  7. Proceed with the completion of the Bomb Threat Checklist immediately without fail. Record the finer details of the call and other relevant information that you can recall. Remember to write down the exact words of the caller of the bomb threat.
  8. Immediately after the bomb threat call is terminated by the caller do not hang. Contact your immediate supervisor and Police with the information using a different phone and wait for further direction.

DO NOT:

  • Evacuate the building before the arrival of police.
  • Use cellular phones and two-way radios; radio signals are potential detonators of a bomb.
  • Touch or move any suspicious or strange looking package within the airport.
  • Activate the fire alarm.
