Sustainable development is a key to future prosperity of any nation.Currently, our society reached a peak of harming nature, and people are starting to think how to reduce those effects. Several issues that contribute to our problems in the 21st century are transportation, food, environment, and energy issues. One of the ways to address these issues is sustainable community. A sustainable community is a community that tries to live without harming nature or people by planning, building, and growing its own food. Such communities are very important for the environment because they find solutions to minimize much of the harm people have caused. One of the primary concerns for most sustainable communities is increased care for and protection of our planet. This paper suggests that on air protection, water protection, and plant diversity as specific ways that an intentional community can support the environmental.
Sustainable communities are built and planned to promote sustainable living, “a lifestyle that could be sustained unmodified for many generations without exhausting any natural resources” (Winter p. 11). Sustainable communities provide support for the environment and create a healthy society. There are different ways for communities to be more sustainable, but most intentional communities our life on the earth safer, healthier, more prosperous, and more liveable.
Most goals and visions of sustainable communities begin with a specific way to see how the world can be benefited. Their vision is that method of sustainable living that will spread and influence our society to conserve resources. The specific community that we are designing will address renewable energy, the environment, food, and transportation.
Renewable energy comes from various natural sources that are sustainably replenished. Harnessing energy from different sources such as the sun, wind, plants, and water will put our country on the path to a cleaner environment, stronger economy, and energy independence. Environmental protection is how to be in relationship with the natural environment on an individual and societal level to enhance the health of the environment and humans. Growing organic crops in gardens can solve food problems and make food healthier and cleaner. Sustainable food farming is the way to enable the society to rebalance the natural resources that have been slowly depleted over the years through our use of fossil fuels, toxic fertilizers, and chemicals.
Therefore, farming methods need to change if healthy food production and increase in the yields is to be achieved in order to feed future generations and get a hunger free world. Sustainable transport systems will add a valuable contribution to environmental sustainability of the communities they serve. Shared transport becomes more power to reduce greenhouse gas and by using any of public transport, car sharing or a sustainable method of travel, we can improve the situation of the environment, reduce pollution, and the costs of transportation.
Sustainable communities contribute to making the world a better place by being conscientious about how we live and how we will impact the world. One community may not make a great difference, but it will contribute to making a small corner of the world more aware of how it lives, and, hopefully, with enough of these communities, a real impact will be seen.
In the recent past, there have been tremendous changes on the environment, which have occurred because of human activities. These changes have affected all kinds of living organisms, so some human beings are turning their attention to the eradication or minimization of these effects. The major issues that have affected human life are transportation problems, starvation due to persistent food insecurity, fluctuation in energy costs, and harm to the environment. Sustainable communities are making all the possible endeavours to eradicate these issues, and they have developed mechanisms to curb these calamities by planning green, building, and growing their own food in sustainable ways. One of the core objectives for several sustainable communities is to have maximum care for this planet earth as well as providing sufficient protection.
This paper focuses on air protection, water protection, and improving the environment through increasing plant diversity. To achieve this objective, I have organized my paper into three major sections. The first section will focus on air protection, the second on water protection, and the third on environmental improvement through diversifying plants.
Among the many natural resources, air is one of the most essential resources required for maintenance of life. In the past century, this resource has suffered continuous pollution. Therefore, the modern world atmosphere is very different from the natural atmosphere that existed during the times before the Industrial Revolution. The common cause of this phenomenon is the release of chemical gases from industries and machineries that are in day-to-day use, such as vehicles. To minimize this phenomenon, there are several techniques to consider.
Removing the pollutants from any material before using it could be of great importance (Landgrebe 20). If they are not removed, these substances come together with the materials that are beneficial to human beings and other living organisms. As the emissions from industries are a major cause of air pollution, researchers are striving to seek alternative sources of energy that will reduce the use of fossil fuels. These fuels are the core producers of toxic gases in the atmosphere. However, this does not mean that there will be absolute elimination of fossil fuels usage.
Recycling of materials is another approach that helps to save energy, hence bringing down the pollutants released during manufacturing (Sandhyarani). The need for a substance is what pushes manufacturers to produce more products to satisfy customer needs while they are making money from it. Nowadays, most businesses are focused on economic rationality and they are more interested in making profit rather than avoiding environmental degradation. It was proved that emissions from industries as well as from different vehicles are extremely harmful for the human health. Nevertheless, this air pollution problem can always be resolved with the help of proper sustainable approach.
Water is the core support of all forms of life. Over the past years, there has been increasing attentiveness to, and concern about, how water pollution is happening all over the world. Therefore, a lot of attention to ensure that its abundance is maintained at all times this necessity needs. However, there is implementation of new approaches towards achieving sustainable utilization of water resources (O’Connor). There are various ways to protect water. Based on experience, treating water is much more expensive than applying measures that prevent this pollution from occurring (Christopher and Barrow).
Therefore, considering this statement, we find that water protection will not only solve the issue of pollution but also the issue of capital saving. For example, implementation of some principles such as the polluter-pays-principle, would serve to strengthen efforts at water protection. This kind of program, is where the cost of preventing pollution, control, and reduction are borne by the polluter would send a warning to those who like doing things for profit hence serve to protect water. Of course, nowadays water pollution is a significant problem, because water is a blessing from God, which must be preserved. Nevertheless, this important issue can be solved through establishing of systems, which can protect water. Moreover, taking these protective measures would be more effective then preventing pollution of water.
Environment at Improvement
Various facilities and conditions help the environment. Plants play a vital role in the improvement of the immediate environment. Plants ingest carbon dioxide, which is a waste product from humans and animals, and they then produce oxygen in return, which is essential for human beings and animals. Due to the high amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, it is crucial to have plants on land and in water to assist in the eradication of CO2. Different types of plants have varying rates of gas consumption. Therefore, diverse plant varieties help to solve the situation. In addition, through the process of photosynthesis, plants transpire hence, releasing excess water in the atmosphere in the form of water vapor. This vapor rises to form clouds, which later fall back to the earth’s surface in the form of rain. If we achieve this, rate of starvation on many regions of planet, earth reduces by a greater percentage.
In addition, critiques argue that environment is being improved by the businesses’ incentives. Many companies nowadays embrace environmental responsibility, because business attitudes toward environmental responsibility have seriously matured (GEMI 1). For example, many companies are creating strategies, which can allow them produce less emissions. In addition, there are also environmental laws and regulations, which are always written for the general case and the controls they impose are incremental (GEMI 1). Of course, the process of implementing these new projects and laws is gradual, because it still has to be tested on effectiveness.
Nevertheless, these incentives cannot be successful without a special support from particular stakeholders. That is why, at the federal and state level, many programs are in place to encourage businesses to voluntarily undertake pollution prevention projects (GEMI 3). In other words, businesses must also be sure that they will not lose from these environmental incentives. For instance, sometimes it can take time and effort to change some managerial system of the company. Moreover, some companies, which are seriously polluting environment, may need to change some mechanic equipment, which can also be quite costly. That is why government is responsible for explaining and encouraging local business to redevelop and become more sustainable.
In conclusion, the above arguments reveal the necessity of sustained protection of air, water, and the environment. Therefore, everybody should embrace the role played by each of the natural necessities that God has given us. Living in such a way that is responsible not only to oneself but also to the environment requires such sustainable techniques to be implemented and prevalent in not only the corporate and industrial setting but also in the consciousness of individuals.
The “conundrum” (Belli p.28) that Pascale proposed in the article by Belli, is only solved through such a living. Sustainable living practices may differ region to region or even through socioeconomic statuses but the overall theme of living in a way that will not remove more natural resources than can be restored is something that requires the participation of all members. To begin participating, it does not require a plot of land but rather maybe a few pots of simple fruits or vegetables. Even an increased awareness of the products that are purchased and their wrapping will lead one to be a more conscientious consumer and thus lead to a more sustainable living.
