1. a) Watching a video on the conflict between Israel and Syria was an eye-opening and enlightening experience. The piece was too graphic with the images of military vehicles preparing themselves for battle. It shows the extent to which soldiers will go to continue the war. There is a part where they show the manufacture of grenades, and have a live section where the military vehicles are engaging in open fire. There are pictures of casualties of war in the streets, and the reporter does not hide anything from the audience’s view (You Tube).  According to Arielle Emmett, some individuals believe that the media is too censored when portraying the war fields and when doing coverage on some of these war prone areas. She notes that America’s media is shutting the audience out from too graphic materials. In as much as the public complain of the amount of sponsorship in the media, they cannot handle the graphic content that the media seeks to hide. This is evident in the fact that the public thought the graphic images of the Haitian earthquake were too much for the public (Emmett, A).

1. b) War coverage is a complex aspect of the society, and only the strong at heart will survive the field of coveting wars and delivering graphic content to the audience. There is a concept concept of war coverage, one that is difficult to the understanding of the average citizen. Good journalism requires one to have special access to information. This is known as a corridor of power that some of the good journalist enjoy (Lynn, 2006).

2. According to Shoemaker and Reese, there is a difference between media reality and social reality. They proceed to explain that media reality is a form of publicity in which the contents of a program does not refer directly to the outside reality, but the reporters give the audience the information that they deem fir for their viewing. There are some aspects of media realty that are surreal, and differ from what is socially acceptable; social reality. Media reality refers to a situation where the contents of a program do not refer directly to the outside reality. Media reality does not point towards outside reality directly, but uses simulation to depict the reality there is. Social reality, on the other hand, is the ideal situation as it appears in the society. It refers to individuals’ ability to cognitively understand all the activities that happen all around them (Shoemaker and Reese, 1996). The media comes close to representing objective reality because of the masses to which it seeks to reach out. Media houses have to gain popularity with their audience, hence have the tendency to cover news that are more objective in order to strike this balance. In reporting the current news, the media has to remain objective, but side with the majority of individuals to ensure that they have their audiences. The manner with which the national news broadcasting journalists cover national events such as the electoral process is objective and seeks to gather the opinions of the citizenry and use them in the broadcast. Also, the advertisement that they air are directly aimed at reaching out to the objective masses. A local broadcaster is more likely to air advertisements closely linked to the audience it seeks to target.

3. An example of celebrity news that would be genuine would be the Forbes list of the richest celebrities in the society. Forbes magazine seeks to rank some of the wealthiest celebrities in the society for them to serve as role models to other individuals in the society. This is genuine because the magazine seeks to honor some of the celebrities for the hard work that has led them to their earnings. This is recognition of their effortless search for success and upon achieving it, the magazine is proud to make the list public to the society. Comedy central’s Daily show is a news source, especially for celebrities. It cannot be classified as a credible news source because of its entertainment audience. The producers of the show have directed it in such a manner that the audience watches it for entertainment purposes rather than information gathering purposes. Some of the guests on the show are parody, and the network is proud of bringing entertainment to the audience after a long day. The fact that it is aired daily does not prove its credibility as a news source, rather a reliable entertainment source and means of delivery to the audience. The celebrities who make the interviews on the show do it purely for entertainment purposes rather than reporting of the news as they are happening in the society. It falls under celebrity news because they are the main focus of the audience. They are the guests on the show, and are interviewed by the host. This is how the audience gathers information on them and uses it to their satisfaction.

4. The article seeks to highlight the ethics gap between academic and journal ethics for mass communication students. There is a prevalence of plagiarism and fabrication of information amongst the students, an aspect that is representative of the ethics gap; students are more concerned with ethical breaches in journalism rather than in their academics. This gap increases amongst students who are closer of their graduation date rather than those who are starting out (Conway and Groshek, 2012). Studies indicated that coursework and applied media experiences are vital in the development of the perception of future journalists and the fundamentals of their ethical behaviors. The article is an analysis of the strict code of ethics that journalists stand by in the course of their work. This code is what ensures that they have produced an original material for their articles and piece of writing. The article focuses on the laxity of journalism students when following the code of ethics for their academics. They are less professional in their academics, but set high standards for the articles they write.

5. a) ’60 Minutes’ was the longest running prime time broadcast on American television. It was the show that first brought the presidential debate to the public in 1960. It was revolutionary because it was the most successful broadcast in the history of American television. The program brought the latest news to the audience and engaged them in activities meant to enrich their livelihoods. The manner with which news were presented ensured that they had an audience at all times, and their popularity never diminished. In a time when the politics was the most vital news to the citizenry, ’60 minutes’ was the first show to televise the presidential debate. Don Hewitt was the producer and creator of the television show that revolutionized television viewing in the country (CBS News).  Cultural chaos refers to the collision between different cultures in the society. In a globalized world, different cultures have different beliefs and differing practices. Exposing these different cultures is bound to bring about chaos due to the different beliefs. Chaos is brought about by the collision of the different cultures, especially when aired in a society with different set of values, beliefs and principles. Chaos can be brought about by the abrasiveness of some cultures and their low tolerance to a set of beliefs that differs from theirs.
