The US Air Force is the youngest American military branch. It is one of the branches of the US military. The US Air Force job is to prepare and train the US Air Force military officers. In addition, the US Air Force is involved in protecting the US and its allies, through fighting the US enemies on air, whenever the US security becomes threatened (Department of the Air Force, 2003). Although the US Air Force is a government-regulated organization, it faces environmental challenges just like other business organizations. Changes in the environment in which an organization operates may pose either opportunities or threats.
The US Air Force operates in a culturally diverse environment. The organization recruits its air force officers across different parts of the world. Therefore, based on the cultural organization of its personnel, the US Air Force has an opportunity to expand its operations all over the world. The US Department of Defense places great emphasis on the security of the US and that of its allies. If the security of one of its allies is threatened, then the security of the US is also threatened. In its 2003 strategic plan, the US Department of the Air Force stated that the aim of the department was to ensure stability in all countries of the world, because instability in one of the countries of the world, affects the economic stability of the US. The US Air Force cultural composition offers a very good opportunity for the organization to achieve its strategic goals (Department of the Air Force, 2003).
The US Air Force highly depends on communication technology, to ensure that information concerning its homeland security, and that of its allies is received, and sent at the right time (An Organizational Study of the United States Air Force, n.d.). Currently, technological advancements continue to be experienced around the world. With the introduction of mobile phones and the internet, communication has become easy across the world. Technological advancement in communication technology offers the US Air Force an opportunity to monitor the US security from different parts of the world (Mondo, 2003). Through utilization of communication technology, the US Air Force would be able to improve its communication systems, across different parts of the world. This way, it will be able to improve its operations, and hence increase its effectiveness in fulfilling its mandate of ensuring the security of the US cyber space, and air space (An Organizational Study of the United States Air Force, n.d.).
However, due to advancement in communication technology, the US Air force faces a threat of possible cyber attacks (Air Force Smart Operation for the 21st Century, 2008). Due to advancement in technology, many people from different parts of the world have become tech-savvy. As the major technology innovators continue to develop more sophisticate systems of communication, other people are busy innovating different ways of hacking into the cyber space. Since the US Air Force depends on satellite, wireless communication and the internet to connect with its personnel around the globe while communication information concerning its security matters, possible cyber attacks by its enemies are possible.
Possible recruitment of an individual from the enemies’ side is possible, since the US Air Force recruits different people from different parts of the world. The US Air Force usually recruits people from different parts of the world, depending on the location where it wants to set an air force base. Therefore, given the cultural, language, and religious differences among people of the world, the organization can sometimes recruit an individual from the enemies’ side unknowingly. Such a person may secretly leak intelligence information about the US Air Force operations to the enemies. This has a potential of threatening the internal intelligence communications between the US Air Force and the US Department of Defense.
Despite being a government-regulated organization, the US Air Force faces different challenges from the external environment in which it operates in, as well as opportunities. By utilizing the opportunities presented by advancement in communication technology, the US Air Force can improve its security operations across the globe. Moreover, the diversified nature of the US Air Force personnel presents with an opportunity to increase its air force bases in different parts of the world. However, the organization faces a threat of possible cyber attacks, and recruitment of individuals allied to the enemies’ side.
