English as a Second Language

English as a native language is easy on the native speakers. However, students and scholars from non-English speaking countries have to contend with having English as a second language. It is difficult for persons who are not native English speakers to be fluent and arrange their ideas in a systematic manner. This thesis is an analysis of some of the reasons why there is difficulty in writing when one is an English-as-second-language (ESL) student. There are different reasons, majority of which are outlined below.

The students have not had the time to hone their writing skills, hence the difficulty in writing and delivering a flawless piece of literature. Non-English speakers fail to incorporate the different aspects and stylistic devices in their writing, hence end up delivering sub-standard literal works. Individuals who have English as a native language are proficient in writing, and have high cognitive understanding of the language. They can incorporate vocabulary in their language quite easily as opposed to ESL speakers. There is a distinct comparison between native English speakers and ESL speakers.

The writings of the latter contain more errors, either grammatical or otherwise as opposed to those of the former. An individual who has adopted English as a second language can live and interact with native English speakers, but their language and grammar may never be as crisp and flawless as that of the native speaker. ESL speakers are conditioned to write and construct their sentences in a manner that is quite distinct and varies from that of the native speakers significantly. There are numerous experienced ESL students, but there often occurs a shortage in writers with perfect writing qualities. One of the reasons and possible explanations for the difficulty of engaging ones audience in their writing for ESL students is that it is simpler to express thoughts and organize them in one’s native language. Cognitive and social factors are some of the crucial aspects that affect learning, language and writing. For English learners, understanding the correct use of grammar is the main problem. This is because it involves the use of different types of sentences, modifiers placement and a coherent establishment and development of the correct sentence structures to use.

Writing can be a difficult and daunting task for ESL students. They have a limited understanding of the English language and, more often than not, are not aware of the meanings of the basic words in the language. This lack of understanding causes them to place vocabularies incorrectly in a sentence, hence distorting its structure. This increases the difficulty of communication through writing, and sometimes speaking. There are different rules in writing that ESL students need to understand and use correctly during their writing process. One should be careful to avoid run-on sentences and incomplete comparisons. Use of dangling modifiers is another common mistake common to sers of English as a second language.

For different students, learning English as a foreign language is frustrating, especially when the students have to attend classes taught in English. Creative writing is one of the ways to introduce fun in learning and is a means of speeding up the learning process. It is an easy way of understanding the different uses of vocabularies and their applications in different parts of a sentence. Creative writing is used to dispel some of the fears of ESL students that they have no real understanding and grasp of the language.

Students who learn English as a second language are not free in the topics they choose and the areas they talk about in their creative writing. This is because they might consider some of these subjects a taboo if they allow their native culture to take effect the manner with which they make such decisions.  There difficulties in vocabulary, syntax and morphology to be experienced by ESL speakers and students. ESL students encounter difficulties when expressing ideas. The manner with which they phrase these ideas influences the audience’s understanding of the written language. There are different individuals with different backgrounds that have an effect on their speaking and writing skills. Native and natural accents determine the manner with which ESL students speak their language. The most crucial aspect is to get individuals to speak comprehensively and lay down their ideas in a comprehensive manner. With ESL students, pronunciation is also a significant problem. The manner with which an individual pronounces words profoundly influences the manner with which they write these words.

ESL speakers do not speak English outside of class, another reason their understanding of the language remains scanty. It is salient for the tutors to encourage students to take up a culture of understanding and speaking the language. In so doing, there is the ease and improvement in their writing process and vocabulary use. English is the most widely used language in the world. Understanding it and learning the correct words and vocabulary to use given any occasion, is the best way to improve one’s status and increase their scope of interest. The reason numerous ESL students do not have an excellent command in the language is their lack of practice and desire to practice the language out of class. English writers have a distinctive style of composing and writing; a style that differs from that of ESL significantly. There is an ease with writing experienced by ENL students, one that is difficult to come by in ESL students. These students have to understand the elements of drafting and delivering a fascinating piece of writing using the different elements of composition writing and conventions that accompany them. Interaction between students, colleagues and friends, is the most vital aspect of interactions in an individual’s daily lives. It is vital that, irrespective of whether one is an ENL or an ESL speaker, they learn the fundamentals of the language. There is a predisposition to think that the English language is simpler than it sounds. The contrary, however, is true. ESL students have to work harder than the rest of the students to ensure that they fully understand the content that is often delivered to them.
