Exploring Educational Governance across States

The state of California is where I will be pursuing my licensure. This is prompted by the fact that it has a fast growing diverse community that makes integration effective. In addition, the education structure database is clearly elaborated with clear guidelines of what each section is required to do. The first concept is on the State which is further divided into four levels. The first level is that of the legislature which is constituted by the assembly education committee, joint committee as well as the senate education committee which are all designed to develop an effective master plan of education in the state (Education Commission of the States, 2011a).

The governor is mandated to appoint the voting members that constitute the state board of education. Other stakeholders who play a vital role in the education sector at the State are the Chief State School Officer who is elected and the State Board of Education that comprises of 10 voting members who are elected by the governor. The regional is the second feature of education at the State of California that includes regional boards and the regional superintendents. In total, there are 58 county boards of education all of whom are elected (Education Commission of the States, 2011b). The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is mandated with appointing the Los Angeles County Board of Education.

On the other hand, there are a total of 58 county superintendents of which three are appointed by the county boards of education while the other 55 county superintendents are elected. The third division of K-12 Governance Structures Database is at the district level where there is a local school board that comprises of a total of 985 local school boards (Education Commission of the States, 2011a). The members of the local school board are elected and there are three members who are appointed by the mayor. The other levels of education include the local superintendants with a total of 975 local superintendents, 8,568 public schools as well as the state policy of collective bargaining agreements.
