A response is vital because one has to state their position before they support any ideas that they might have. A response is an avenue through which an individual or the audience responds to an interpretation or opinion.

The author proceeds by explaining that mere disagreement is not satisfactory. One has to provide a claim to support their disagreement; a claim that is valid and concerned with the argument. He continues to state that there are different ways of disagreeing. The most obvious one being that the person disagreeing does not have a valid claim to the disagreement; rather, the information provided has a stunning revelation that led to the disagreement claim.

The one who agrees should also have a valid claim to their argument. This can be done by introducing something new to the conversation and improving on the previously introduced argument. One has to have some difference between their agreement and the opinion with which they are arguing.

The third position is to agree and disagree simultaneously. According to the author, this position allows one to provide a complex and comprehensive argument. This position gets the reader to place themselves on the map of the positions mentally, and invoke a thoughtful response to their argument. However, one might be tempted to stress the importance of one response over the other, hence losing track of their argument. This position allows an individual to state the merits and disadvantages of an argument without firmly and clearly stating their point of argument.

The contradictory part of this passage is the agreement part where the author states that when one is agreeing with an argument or stating a motion for it, they have to introduce something to the argument and enhance the information put forth. However, it is universally accepted that when one offers to agree with another individual, they offer only the information that supports their argument. They do not introduce any new information into the argument. New information causes a rising of another argument, and the participants will digress from the original discussion.

The response of agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously is quite contradictory. Although the author states that this allows the individual to bring a complex argument into the discussion, it is not satisfactory to be uncertain about one’s response. The author states that the responding party will give the pros and cons of the argument and enhance it. However, such approach is contradictory because a relevant argument has to have individuals who either strongly agree or disagree on an issue. If an individual is on the fence about a decision, they will make a stronger argument for one response, and leave the other unsupported.

To sum up, this paper discussed the insight of the different types of responses of which one was not aware. It allows one to study themselves and the manner with which they support a stated argument.
