Value of Foreign Travel

The best definition of foreign travel is moving from one country to another for either permanent or temporary settlement (Neumann, pg 3). Most individuals all over the world enjoy travelling from country to country, while others prefer to stay in their own countries their entire life. It is believed that foreign travel is extremely valuable to all individuals, and this is why governments encourage their citizens to travel widely. This paper will highlight the three main advantages of foreign travel, which include cultural exchange, educational purposes, and new experiences.

First, foreign travel is valuable because an individual is exposed to cultural exchange. Each country in the world has its own distinct way of life. For instance, the cultural view towards courtship in South Africa is not the same as that in Spain; South Africans believe that there has to be a long period of courtship before marriage while the Spanish may permit marriage even before courtship. Travelling from country to country exposes one to different cultures; individuals get to know the rules governing marriage, education, and death in various countries. Moreover, one learns how individuals view religion in different countries. The history of a country is another important aspect of culture an individual can learn; one learns about the heroes and heroines of a particular culture, their ancient beliefs, and how these individuals have transformed over time. In return, one shares his or her culture with individuals of other countries. This is a good and profitable way for cultural exchange.

Secondly, foreign travel is important because it gives a person the chance to study and be rich in matters of education. Individuals, who travel to foreign places for education, often do so for long periods that may extend to even more than four years. Foreign travel for education purposes is important because some countries may lack the resources a learner needs to pursue his or her educational preferences. Therefore, foreign travel gives one a chance to fulfill his educational goals and achieve his life’s desires. Some individuals also travel abroad so that they can teach in schools and other educational institutions in another country. They get the chance to share information, and in return, they learn a lot from their students. They also earn as they teach and learn. This makes travelling for educational purposes extremely worthwhile.

Lastly, individuals often travel in order to acquire new experiences. Foreign processes and procedures vary widely from what one is accustomed to in his own country (Gallagher, pg 14). This means that individuals get exposure to new ways of doing things. For example, the transport system in many countries is not the same; some use water transport to a greater extend while others prefer road transport. Foreign travel exposes individuals to both these ways of transport, and this gives foreigners to learn and appreciate such experiences. There are also varying geographical features in the entire globe, and individuals who visit foreign nations wish to witness this for themselves. Young people who travel abroad get access to money and foreign currencies. They have the freedom to choose how they spend their money. They, therefore, get the experience of how to use their funds wisely and sparingly, so that they can survive in foreign nations.

Travelling for cultural exchange, educational purposes, and new experiences are the three top advantages of foreign travel for an individual. However, foreign travel is extremely profitable not only to a single individual, but also to the entire country from which a person comes (Gallagher, pg. 44). The main reason for this is that experiences gained by an individual during foreign travel are shared with friends from his own country. These experiences are later applied in life to benefit a country. Governments should therefore encourage their citizens to invest in foreign travel; this is a great way to develop the person and the country at large.
