Healthcare Ecosystem

Healthcare ecosystem is collection of the activities and resources involved in the provision of healthcare services to a society. It is very important because human diseases are on the increase and people have to be made aware of them and at the same time treated and taken care of. This has therefore seen the establishment of healthcare organizations such as John Hopkins, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and many others around the world for healthcare facilitation. This write up will therefore discuss the John Hopkins healthcare; one legislation that impacts on its activities, mission and value statements and their impacts on the community. It will also discuss the internal promotional activities which are meant to improve quality of the organization’s initiatives. Finally, it analyses the use and impacts of health informatics and evaluates application of the technologically emerging trends in support of the organization’s projects and initiatives.

John Hopkins Hospital is the healthcare institution that is based in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States of America. It was created in the year 1995 to be part of the Hopkins Health System and the John Hopkins University School of Medicine in order to develop and administer contractual health relationships. It therefore deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. That is, it provides primary care, secondary care, tertiary care and public health (Cohn & Hough, 2008).

Over the years, this healthcare center has experienced growth and improvement in terms of coverage and activities which can be attributed to the healthcare legislations within the country. Examples include the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 that deliberated on security measures in healthcare centers. This has led to the improvement of the John Hopkins’ patient security measures. This is because it requires that all the health care providers should put into place security measures in order to protect and maintain confidentiality of the individual’s health information that is sent or stored electronically. John Hopkins, therefore, created the office within its Health System Legal department and trained its workforce so as to ensure compliance with this legislation (Goldstein, 2007).

As an organization, John Hopkins has got its mission statement and values which are meant to guide and steer its operations. Its mission is to improve health of the community and the world by setting standard of excellence in medical education, research and clinical care. On the other hand, its values include observance of excellence, ethics and integrity, good leadership, respect, patience  and remaining family focused as well as collaborative and compassionate (Goldstein, 2007).

In comparison with the services provided to the community, it is true that this healthcare is committed towards achieving their mission while also operating as per their core values. This is because it focuses on the funding research activities which are meant to find better treatments and cure to the members of the community. It is also playing an active role towards educating the families and physicians on the awareness of various diseases and their available treatments. The health care also advocates for linking of the HHT patients with other treatment centers worldwide. Besides satisfying its mission, it has also employed policy and measures control department which ensures that the core values are adhered to by the members (White & Brown, 2012).

In addition, to continuously promote the quality improvement initiatives, John Hopkins is constantly building an infrastructure that keeps safety and improvement in minds of the care givers. Equally, the healthcare leaders do have regular meetings with the frontline staff and managers in order to discuss the quality improvement issues. A team of quality improvement committee has also been set in order to continuously review the quality improvement measures in the whole healthcare department. Other committees, such as the patient safety committee and safety leaders, have been set to work towards promotion of the quality improvement initiatives (White & Brown, 2012).

According to Goldstein (2007), health informatics is the science that deals with devices, resources and methods which are required to achieve the best in acquiring, storing, retrieving and usage of the information regarding people’s health. In the recent past, there were several technological changes that have occurred in this field and John Hopkins is not an exception in applying them when trying to basically improve efficiency of the services offered. It has therefore employed the use of the health informatics technologies through its use of specially enabled computers. This has been applied in the areas such as nursing, clinical care, dentistry, pharmacy and public health, so as to help manage the patient medical records, laboratory results medications and inventory. Additionally, health informatics has been used in the implementation and optimization of the information systems within the organization. This is because it forms communication infrastructure that also links and enables the flow of information among health care stakeholders.

The change in the technology is another factor that is really embraced by John Hopkins, since it ensures the improved efficiency in the delivery of services. This is seen by how the organization utilizes the emerging technological trends in support of its projects and initiatives. These trends include the use of mobile health technology, Telehealth services, robot devices, as well as that of the social media such as facebook for communicating its services. For instance, mobile technology has been used to improve its global linking communication program between other health care centers and patients. Telehealth services, on the other hand, are used to boost communication for the MedBiquitous project that is meant to support data collection used to measure the scope of continuing health care education on opioid medications (White & Brown, 2012).

On the other hand, the robot assisted surgical devices have been in use by this health care center in order to facilitate handling of patients. Health at home is another trend in the health care that has seen John Hopkins conduct telemedicine and online virtual physician visit through e-mail and video chats; hence saving time and resources (White & Brown, 2012).

In conclusion, the provision of health care services is very important in the today’s society and therefore should be focused towards reaching as many people as possible. Just like was the case with John Hopkins health care organization, there is thus the need for improved leadership, technology and continuous research to help ensure improved healthcare.
