The United Nations (UN) is an international organization that came into existence on 24th October 1945 upon the ratification of the UN Charter with 51 member States. Celebration to mark the ratification of the UN Charter is done every year on this day. The UN’s secretariat is headed by the Secretary-General and the union bases its principles on justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people. It thus brings all the member nations to work together in the advancement of peace and development. The UN does this through a platform for the need for countries to balance global interdependence and national interests when addressing international problems.

Currently, the UN has a global membership of 192 nations who meet in the General Assembly. Here, each country, irrespective of its economic, physical, and geographic status is entitled to a single vote in non-binding decisions of the UN. The decisions of the UN at the General Assembly are taken as the world governmental opinion on issues of development and peace.

The UN has offices spread across the world but it has headquarters at New York. However, the UN European Headquarters is located at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland. Some of the other nations that host UN offices include Vienna and Austria while the Economic Commissions offices are in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As an international organization, the UN has its own flag, post office, and postage stamps. It also has six official languages used in communication. These are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russia, and Spanish.
