The etymological meaning of term “politics”, as derived from the Greek word politikos, is the art or science of managing a nation. However, the concept of politics has expanded over the years incorporating institutions of learning, trade unions, religious sects and the public sector. The most prevalent form of politics, however, is that which exists in the national arena. Nevertheless, the youths who constitute the majority of the population in most countries continually shun politics. This is due to a myriad of reasons that are underlined by the nature of politics.
Politics is an extremely costly activity. For an individual to engage in active politics aiming to ascend to a political office, it is necessary to have sufficient financial condition. This is the major determent of the youths from engaging in politics. Since most countries have approved laws that govern the funding of campaign, an individual engaging in politics must have an initial capital base. The capital which is mostly expended on campaign paraphernalia, such as posters, caps, stickers and placards, is not readily available for the young people. As a result, most of them shun politics and political activities.
The fact that politics is an extremely time consuming activity is also a reason for most youths to avoid politics. Politics and campaign are comparative issues as they are completely conjoined. Political campaign is an extremely involving venture since it is practical. The campaigns do not only require the physical presence of the person seeking the political office but also the presence of people around him. Therefore, it does not only take time of an individual but also time of the people dealing with him. For most young people it is better to spend this time for their social activities and enjoying their youth.
The issue of numbers in politics cannot be overemphasized. Most youths are unable to marshal these numbers that are necessary to mount a serious political campaign. This is due to the absence of basic networks. These networks require time in order to be built and activated at the height of political activities. Additionally, the logistics involved in increasing these numbers are extremely complicated, thus creating an immense challenge for the youths. As a result they shun politics in return.
Politics has been permanently considered as a ‘dirty game.’ This is due to the undercutting of allies and foes in a bid to ensure political survival. This is the major reason for which most young people avoid politics. The immorality which is associated with politics sometimes results in skirmishes causing bodily harm and the loss of lives in extreme cases. Such occurrences prevent the youths from being involved in the political arena.
The transparent nature of politics is also a reason for the young people to shun politics. The fact that your private life is exposed to the public domain does not augur well for the youths. Individuals seeking political office are usually subjected to a rigorous vetting process. This process usually reveals critical aspects of individual’s life that should remain private. However, it happens unavoidably y since political leaders are the custodians of a people’s right to exercise their freedom.
From the foregoing, it is evident that the nature of politics is not favorable for the lives of most youths. Politics requires a lot of capital which is not available for the young people. In addition, it also requires time that most youths would prefer to devote to other activities. The ‘dirty’ and transparent nature of politics also makes most youths shun politics. Young people prefer to have a private life devoid of public scrutiny, a life that politics does not permit them to live.
