A Boy's Life

The rise of transgender cases among children is sounding an alarm among parents and teachers to prepare to cater for children who have gender identity challenges. Several parents and schools are responding to such cases as seen with the rising number of organizations of parents who have transgender children. In the same manner, social amenities such as schools are also adapting to mechanisms that can help children with such cases to cope normally in their environment. This paper presents an evaluation of the problems that developed in one boy’s life as a result of his gender identity and how his parents, friends, and the school have worked with his situation. The paper uses an article titled A Boy’s Life by Hanna Rosin.

A School System Responds to a Boy’s Life

Parents have a responsibility in the determining the upbringing of their children in a socially acceptable manner. The society has always had certain characters and practices that are considered normal and usual among its members and therefore when they occur among the young people they are rebuked. However, there have also been those considered weird and abnormal and when they come up, they are rebuked and discouraged to the latter.

In most societies, it was normal for a boy of age to be attracted to a girl also of age sexually and the two could be helped their parents to get marriage and leave together as husband and wife (Arnett, 2000). But in the last fifty years, the society has been subjected to changes in sexual relationships between man and woman whereby some men are attracted to their fellow men while women are also attracted to fellow women. Evidently, such practices were in existence since ancient times but the rate at which the practice is manifested in the modern society rattles the attention of the psychologist. Additionally, there is also an increase in the number of children who are transgender in their sexual orientation (Dunkel & Sefcek, 2009). This increase has moved parents, family friends, and even teachers to respond to the needs of children who have gender identity disorders in helping them to cope with their normal lives. This paper explores the problems that developed in the lives of a boy named Brandon who has gender identity disorder and illustrates how his parents, friends, and the school have worked with his situation.

Many children are being born with conditions that are beyond their control. For those who are born with gender identity disorders, things can be worse on them if their parents and the community around them do not have an idea what transgender entails (Rosin, 2008).  In the case of Brandon, her mother had not had anything about transgender people and thus tried everything she could to change the behaviors of her son. For instance, when they went in store and the boy wanted to buy thinks that were identified as feminine, his mother could not allow him. This is evidently because the parent has no idea that some people can naturally be born with gender identity disorders and can be helped to live a normal life with others in the society. 

It is only after such parents get to be exposed to the truth about transgender children that they get to support them in their lives (Nelson et al, 2007). The exposure of the mother to the information about transgender children and gender identity disorder ultimately transforms her relationship with the child. The education system has a responsibility to bring the society to knowledge of the various disorders including gender identity disorders that children can be borne with and which the parents need to understand so that they can help such children.

On the other hand, the school also has a responsibility of providing a good environment for children with gender identity disorders to cope within the learning environment through provision of tools and instruments that can assure them of a good learning environment. The transgender children are exposed to bullying and other forms of violence in schools (Rosin, 2008).   As such, the school management has the responsibility of educating their members about gender identity disorder and transgender children among their members and find ways through which such children can be helped.

Several researches have revealed that gender identity among human beings is inherently built within the body makeup and any attempt to try and change the gender of somebody cannot succeed (Diamond, 2000). This was the case with Reimer who was sexually changed through medical surgery to become a lady but failed to develop the feminine characteristics. Studies on gender diversity thus continue to prove that gender identity is influenced by some innate or immutable factors. Furthermore, the gender diversity that exists among people can vary from one extreme end to the other with some falling into transsexual area.

Still, some people develop a gender identity disorder where there really gender is inhibited by the body chemicals and processes that they undergo. This means that gender identity is construed within the genetic makeup of a person and therefore medication practices cannot change the way people see themselves as either male or female. The innate ability to recognize ones gender is thus responsible for the gender identities that people associate themselves with (Lippa, 2012). For that reason, some people develop what is considered as gender identity disorder that is seen as weird and strange to the society. This can also explain the increase in number of people who are gay or lesbian since their sexual drive is more leaned toward people of the same sex.

In cases where a child is discovered to have a gender identity disorder, the education system in question can play a crucial role in sensitizing the society about the existence of such children in the society and provide information on how such children can be helped so that they cope with their situation in the society. The education system should also encourage continued research in the understanding of gender identity disorder so that parents who have children of this nature can have reliable and valid information on how they can help their children to integrate into the society. The understanding of such information by all members of the society will help remove the discrimination and bullying that transgender children are exposed to as they interact with other members of the society.
