Drinking in college among the students is one of the problems in schools. The causes are usually due to the social norms of the students and the college culture. This results to poor performance in colleges and health risks among the students who drink alcohol. In this case, the independent variable is high risk in drinking in college schools (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). This is mainly because the independent variables are the variables that can be manipulated (Rubin & Barbie, 2010). For instance, high risk drinking in college is the variable that is being manipulated in this case of college students drinking alcohol. Additionally, it is independent from the other variables
Poor performance among the college students is the dependent variable. This is because dependent variables are variables that can be observed, that is, they are observable. Additionally, this variable depends on other variables. The researchers in this case are trying to observe the consequences that are caused by drinking in college. One of the consequences observed is that it causes poor performance among the students (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). It is for this reason; high risk drinking in college students is the independent variable while poor performance among the students in college is the dependent variable.
After the establishment of the independent and dependent variables it is easy to come up with a hypothesis statement. The hypothesis statement needs to make a connection between the independent variable and the dependant variable. On the same time the hypothesis statement is what the research expects to find out at the end of the research (Rubin & Barbie, 2010). In high risk drinking in colleges among the students it has caused the students to perform poorly in schools (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). In this case, the research expects to find out that drinking alcohol causes poor performance to students. Therefore, in this case the hypothesis statement is high risk drinking in college students causes poor performance due to lack of study time.
