Women work in managerial and professional jobs as well as in labor and trades jobs and in the service industry. Until recently, cultural and legal practices, combined with the lethargy of longstanding educational and religious traditions, have hampered women’s participation and entry in the workforce. According to the American Bureau or Labor Statistics’, it is estimated that women held almost 49.8 percent of the nations 134 million job by June 2011. The good thing is that women are gaining the vast majority of employment opportunities (Graves, 2011). Apart from being denied equal employment opportunities like their male counterparts, the few women who get employed earn less than their male counterparts. Even with the same professional and college degrees, women earn less than men. For example, among the creative class workers such as teachers, engineers, architects, journalists and bankers, women earn much less than men. Among year-round, full-time workers, white men with professional degrees earn over 49% more than white women with a comparable professional degree in a life time. This gap is narrower among African-Americans, with black men earning 24% more than their female counterparts. Generally, women who work full-tine earn 23 percent less that their male counterparts (Graves, 2011). The wage gap is even wider among Hispanic American women and African American. Nonetheless, there is mounting evidence that the ship may be turning around in terms of equal pay. Luscombe (2010) assert that of the 150 biggest cities in America, the median salaries for young women in 147 cities are 8 percent higher than their young men in their peer group.
