For instance, Rose learns from her mother An-Mei about the significance of speaking for herself in the case of a divorce. This means she has to overcome all the traditional barriers in Chinese society that prevent women from agitating for their rights.  Tan (2006) asserts that An-Mei tells her daughter that she should not save her marriage in case she is subjected to suffering but should stand up and speak for herself.
